History
The overall aim of the course is to help students develop key life skills such as teamwork, communication, planning, leadership and time management. It also strives to encourage students to discover their personal strengths and to develop their self-confidence in a mature manner. They will develop as independent historical learners through independent learning and use project management skills to prepare themselves for the world of work. Through the school radio project, they will integrate their work and use it to develop links with the wider community and to reach out to contemporary figures to build upon their communication skills. The course is supplemented with a wide variety of visual and auditory stimuli through the mediums of radio TV documentaries as well as through the study of primary and secondary source materials. This will endeavour to equip students for Leaving Cert history with the necessary skills.
TY History this year focuses on US History as it is topical in the news today. General US History in 20th Century is the focus with a special focus on the Vietnam War due its parallels with conflict today and its frequent appearance as a document Question as Leaving Certificate. Students will interrogate original primary source material in class and bridge the gap between Junior and Senior Cycle. Course content will be interspersed with tasks to help with the School Radio Module. The main focus will be on the Documents Questions on the Vietnam War and the Moon Landing. Students will study the following modules:
Term 1: US Gov and Structure, Truman Doctrine, School History Podcast.
Term 2: The Vietnam War Civil Rights,
Term 3: US Economic Policy US Culture,
Term 4: US Military and Technology. The Space Race and Moon Landing US Foreign Policy.
